The crucible of humiliation

I played in the Captain’s Day today at our club Mill Green. I had the best front nine I’ve ever had followed by the worst back nine I’ve ever had. I often talk about sportsmen not having the winkle to win and I think this applied to me today. Instead of pushing on from the great front nine I started to worry about making a mistake and of course the mistakes started to happen. I went from putting like Tom Watson on the front nine to putting like a fool on the back nine ending up three putting five greens. I think the problem was I really wanted to win this for my Dad and I put myself under too much pressure. Chip Beck would’ve been proud.

Top 40 golfer again

I managed to qualify for the second round of the club championship at Mill Green on Saturday with an 81. Slumped to an 89 the next day. The others must’ve been bad.

Played in the June Saturday Medal at Mill Green and had a terrible 91. Started with a nine (trouble in the treacherous rough) and it was down hill from there. Had nine pars in all but the rest was dross. Despite that, my swing changes are starting to feel more comfortable.

A bit better

Played in the Sunday medal at Mill Green and shot a respectable 83 (net 71). In truth my irons were dreadful again but I chipped and putted beautifully with not one three putt. I need to continue to work on my iron play though.

Disaster at the Spring Meeting

Played in the Spring Meeting at Mill Green. Scored 22 points on the front nine with 3 birdies but only 7 points (yes 7) on the back nine. Blobbed the 11th hole but recovered with a good par at the 12th hole but only got 2 points in the last 6 holes. Had to play two balls down the 13th hole because I wasn’t sure of the ruling over some casual water and that seemed to throw me. Golf can be a very humbling at times.

The slump continues

Played in the April sunday medal at Mill Green. Went round the first nine in 39 strokes playing very well and hitting my irons much better than recently. Slumped to 47 on the back nine that went par, double bogey, double bogey, par, double bogey, par, treble bogey, double bogey, par. Too many doubles for my liking. Once again my irons let me down and I was very poor in the bunkers I seemed to find with great regularity.

Heritage Trophy

Played in the last board competition at Mill Green on Saturday, The Heritage Trophy. Scored 38 points which probably won’t be enough to win. Played well but walked off feeling I should’ve scored a couple of points more as I had a couple of three putts.
The scoreboard computer wasn’t working so I don’t know how well I was doing so I’ll have to find out later in the week with a visit to the club.
