In what seemed to go on longer than five days, the U.S. Open eventually ended as a bit of a damp squib (like the beginning really). It was never going to be an exciting finish and Glover did well to play as steady as he did but in the end, because the course was setup to be a war of attrition, there were never going to be the opportunities for players to have a chance to catch him up.

I sometimes think some people says things just for effect. Mark Roe marked his own card in the Open a few years ago when completing the correct card would’ve put him in a good place to win. He was disqualified. That shows the measure of the man.

So for him to say there’s a cloud hanging over Woods is wishful thinking. If Woods can win the US Open with a dodgy knee and a stress fracture of his leg, then he can fight back from his present trouble. I’m sure he’s going to treat himself to the best medical help possible.

BBC SPORT | Golf | Woods seals dramatic US Open win

At one stage when Woods had a three shot lead at the halfway stage, it looked liked the play-off was going to be a typically dull affair. As soon as Mediate birdied the 15th to take a one shot lead, then I did start to wonder if Woods might actually lose. The back nine was excellent with both players going head to head like in matchplay.

When Woods birdied the 18th to force sudden death, it did seem that Mediate had had his chance. Mediate couldn’t do anymore than have three birdies on the back nine. Playing Tiger Woods means you need even more than playing brilliantly, you have to reach God like status and Mediate is only human. I’m not sure Woods is though.

That no one could manage to match him and go for it shows their lack of belief and let’s face it ability rather than Wood’s undoubted brilliance. His knee may be hurting but his heart is beating stronger than all the rest of the field put together.

Let’s hope someone gives him a run for his money. Something tells me they won’t.

I watched the coverage on Sky and have to say Euan Murray and Bruce Critchley drove me mad. They constantly harped on about Tiger not being as good as he used to be. The pair neglected the fact he’s not played for several months because of his injury so when he ripped through the back nine in 30, they had to eat their own words. The third round will be very interesting and Tiger’s the man to beat yet again.

Disappointing

Both Darren Clarke and Kenny Perry have decided not bother to try and qualify for this year’s US Open. What is wrong with these players ? Playing in the Majors is your chance to enter the history books.

One thing I’d like to do

The Memorial Tournament

I’ve wanted to play Muirfield Village ever since we won the Ryder cup there in 1987. It just looks a fascinating course to play. I probably wouldn’t break a hundred.

Watch and weep

Keep it simple stupid

Good advice from Annika. She makes it look deceptively easy to swing a golf club.

Good news

Looks like Tiger’s going to be Ok for the US Open next week and he’s be paired with Mickelson in the first two rounds. I bet Tiger will scare him to death.

Steady progress

And finally a word about myself. I scored 39 points on Sunday and although it may be a false dawn, I feel I’m onto something after several years of being in the golfing doldrums.
